What Is Identity? Understanding the Person You Are Becoming
Who am I?
It sounds like a simple question, but our answer can change throughout our lives.
Identity is our evolving sense of who we are. It is shaped by our values, beliefs, experiences, relationships, culture, roles, interests, and the way we understand ourselves in the world. It is the story we develop about ourselves—where we have been, who we are today, and who we are becoming.
Identity is not one single thing. We hold many identities at once. We can be a mother, daughter, partner, friend, professional, caregiver, creative, leader, and so much more. These roles can be meaningful parts of who we are, but they are not the entirety of who we are.
And our identities can change. Major life transitions often bring this into focus. Becoming a parent, starting or leaving a career, entering a relationship, experiencing divorce, moving to a new place, or simply entering a new stage of adulthood can cause us to question parts of ourselves we once felt certain about.
Sometimes this feels exciting. Other times, it can feel confusing or even unsettling.
You may find yourself thinking:
“I don't feel like myself anymore.”
“I know I love my life, so why do I feel like something is missing?”
“What do I actually want?”
“Who am I outside of what everyone needs from me?”
These questions don't necessarily mean something is wrong. Sometimes they are signs that your identity is evolving. Identity is not about finding ourselves. We often hear that we need to “find ourselves” again after a major life transition. But what if the goal isn't to return to who you were?
What if you are becoming someone new?
Growth does not require abandoning previous versions of ourselves. Instead, our identities can expand. We can carry pieces of who we have been while making room for new values, desires, roles, and possibilities. Identity work creates space for those complexities. It invites us to slow down and ask: What matters to me now? What parts of myself feel alive? What have I outgrown? What do I want to carry forward? And who am I becoming?
There is no single moment when we “figure out” our identity. It is an ongoing process of understanding ourselves, reflecting on our experiences, and making intentional choices about the lives we want to create. You are not a finished product. You are a person continually becoming. And sometimes, the most important question isn't “Who was I?” It's “Who am I now—and who do I want to become?”
